Honorable Mention
Still
Lady MacB

"Male and female, he created them"

Before the molding of clay,
Before the merging of waters,
Before the mingling of winds,
We filled the void.
We were Eden.
Souls brought into being
With a single holy breath.
Dust of my dust,
We fed on damsons, melons, dates and olives;
Let rich nectar drip over our
Naked skins as we walked the verdant gardens.
Our passions as innocent as our hunger.

With the roaring of the waters,
With the rising of the winds,
With the retreating of the clay,
We reigned upon the earth.
We were the storm.
Raging, thrashing, screaming our name.
And we were the ark,
Sealed not with bitumen and tar
But sweat and semen and saliva -
Destiny's bond, beyond Gilgamesh's ken.
We rode the tumid flood our desire had wrought
Until the raven found its shelter.

After the quelling of the winds,
After the kilning of the clay,
After the quenching of the waters,
We scorched the tundra.
We are the sun.
Not inconstant moon nor intemperate day,
But the bright, hot sear of a blazing star.
Untouchable, unreachable to mere men.
Fires stoked blue and beyond.
Heat forging heat -
Too powerful for elementary boundaries,
We burn
Still.
